Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

This bridleway is in two parts and is quite long, being bisected by the lane known as Pembury Walks. When the A21 was upgraded, it was moved slightly away from Tunbridge Wells towards Pembury woodland. Horse riders and footpath walkers then have no further access and will either have to turn round and go back or follow the new access road back up to Pembury Walks or Dislingbury Road where the bridleway comes out onto the private drive. There is no gate or stile but there are four wooden posts sunk into the ground with enough gap to allow horses through.

Gates / Stiles

Gates: 1
Stiles: 2

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

This footpath is quite a long one and goes through some lovely different types of scenery. If you start at Albans Lodge in Romford Road, you walk down the lane past apple orchards, cottages and farm buildings until you come to a stile, after which you must turn right into woodland. After a lovely walk through the wood, the path passes by Footpath WT 205 which goes back towards Matfield. The path starts off with a pleasant walk of approximately 250m through an orchard. It then goes down a steep uneven footpath before passing through a grass meadow of about 350m.

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

Much of the ground is subject to RSPB ruling and at the Tonbridge Road end there is another locked gate (no stile), but an unusual mixture of tree wood dug into the ground in a strange arrangement making it impossible to enter other than by zig-zagging through the poles.

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

From Stone Court Farm, the footpath carries on up through neglected orchards, down quite a steep slope until it reaches Snipe Wood where it does a zig zag down quite a steep slope. This is, at times, quite muddy and difficult to walk. The path then goes over a wooden bridge over the stream. Then there is a steep muddy climb until you cross over Footpath WT 226 up through the wood until you reach Romford Road. You then cross over and carry on up through the orchard crossing over Footpath WT 228 and carry on through orchards, cobnut trees and woodland, finally crossing over the Pembury parish boundary, passing quite a large pond and a collection of cottages until you reach the Maidstone Road.

WT 226

Location

The footpath runs down from Henwood Green Road near Beagles Wood Road and joins WT 248.

Condition

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

From Beagles Wood Road the path goes below the orchard and over a short wooden footbridge over a stream. It then veers off to the left – the surface here is often muddy and uneven. You then cross a bridge over the same stream before going up into the orchard for about 250m to join bridleway WT 248. Carry on down through Marlborough Wood across the stream and up through pastureland taking you over the village boundary onto Dundale Road at Elmhurst Farm. Whilst it is not a very long walk it is quite pleasant.

WT 237

Location

This footpath goes up across the field opposite the top of Canterbury Road. It then enters a shallow piece of woodland before meeting up with Footpath WT 239A and then passing over the bridge over the A21 before meeting up with WT 239.

Condition

Muddy on section between bridge over A21 and WT 239.

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

The path up across the field by Canterbury Road is normally pretty solid but can get a bit slippery when wet but there is plenty of grass to walk on.  Once over the A21 the path passes adjacent a wooden panel fence on one side and a small woodland on the opposite side. Unfortunately, this section of path can become a mud bath when wet and a short cut has been made through the wood before meeting up with WT 239. Wonderful views of the North and South Downs at the junction of WT 237 and WT 239.

WT 238

Further Guidance (Summer 2022)

There are good landscape views to the right looking out towards Haywards Heath where WT 239 meets WT 223.

At the first pond there is a swing gate on the left-hand side giving access to the remaining part of the path which takes you down across three fields with the footpath marked until you come to a lightly wooded area and a bridge across a stream. Follow the footpath round to the right across the field until you come to a stile and gate which takes you out onto Dundale Lane opposite a farm. Sadly, there is no option other than to walk the return route or turn left up the hill up Dundale Lane until you reach Footpath WT 236 at Elmhurst Farm which brings you back to Bo-Peep corner.
