ABOUT PEMBURY

Pembury is a large village in the county of Kent in the south-east of England, UK with a population of around 6,500. It lies within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is to the north-east of the town of Tunbridge Wells.

*** AA MILITARY ROAD RUN SUNDAY 14 APRIL 2024 *** This event returns to Pembury with around 60-70 privately owned historic military vehicles and veteran, vintage and classic cars passing down the High Street and Hastings Road between 10.15 and 11.30 approximately. They can best be seen from the Village Green, where two Ferret Scout Cars are expected to be on display in the Camden Car Park. Vehicles will be travelling down the A21 from Sevenoaks to Hastings to commemorate the 115th Anniversary of the original “Guards Dash”.The event has been organised by the Invicta-Military Vehicle Preservation Society (IMPS) and the AA, in conjunction with members of the Veteran Car Club, and will be raising money for Combat Stress. Pembury Scouts will be holding a collection.On 17th March 1909 a procession of cars, packed with Guardsmen, set off from London, travelling down the A21 to Hastings. This was the first time that motor vehicles were used to transport troops operationally. The exercise was organised by the War Office and the AA to assess the effectiveness of moving a battalion of troops by car to the coast “in the event of a threat of invasion”. It was christened by the Press as the “Guards Dash to Hastings”. ( See Bygone Pembury Book for pics and details p.154).Last year the entrants described the reception in Pembury as “amazing”.
